Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth.

Marcus Aurelius:
'Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth.”

The Greek philosopher Plato left us a powerful metaphor in his famous 'Allegory of the Cave' that seems tailor-made for the age of social media. Imagine men who have been chained in a cave since birth and are forced to look only at the wall in front of them. Behind them, a fire casts the shadows of passing objects onto the wall. The men believe that the shadows are the true reality.
What does this mean? For Plato, the world we perceive through our senses (the 'sensible world') is like those shadows: changeable and imperfect, and an imitation of a higher reality — the 'world of Ideas' (the 'intelligible world') — where true, unchanging forms reside. His allegory is an invitation to free oneself from the chains of illusion and embark on a difficult journey towards true knowledge.
In an era dominated by social media, we can draw a disturbing parallel. Our screens have become the walls of the cave. Retouched images, glossy lives, carefully crafted news and 'influencers' who only show a façade — these are all shadows. They hypnotise us, keeping us chained to the belief that this is 'reality', the 'truth', the model to follow. Like the men in the cave, we are often unaware of the world 'out there', which is made up of authentic experiences, real flaws, deep conversations and complex truths that cannot be conveyed in a 15-second story.
Plato's message today is a call for critical literacy. He invites us to stop passively consuming digital content and start asking ourselves: 'What's behind this image? Who is projecting it? What is the true reality?' It is an invitation to 'turn off the screen' for a while, to see the world with our own eyes and seek depth and truth beyond appearances. True freedom does not lie in following the latest online trend, but in breaking free and stepping out of the cave to see the world through the lens of our own reason.
