The sacred month of Saga Dawa 2025 (28 May - 25 June)
Saga
Dawa is the most important and sacred month in the Tibetan Buddhist
calendar. It is the fourth lunar month and in 2025 starts on 28 May and
ends on 25 June.
The most
auspicious day of this month is the full moon, the 15th lunar day,
known as Saga Dawa Düchen. This day marks three of the most significant
events in the life of Buddha Shakyamuni: his birth, enlightenment and
parinirvana.
Saga Dawa
is often called ‘the month of merits’. It is believed that all positive
(and negative) deeds performed during this period are multiplied many
times over. For this reason, Tibetan Buddhists make special efforts to
engage in virtuous activities and spiritual practice. The 15th day, Saga
Dawa Düchen, is considered particularly powerful: the effects of
actions performed on this day are believed to be magnified millions of
times.
It is a time to
live with more awareness, more kindness and more devotion, not only for
our own good, but also for the good of all.
The month of Saga Dawa is also a special time for Buddhists to honour the life and teachings of Buddha Sakyamuni. During this period, it is considered auspicious to engage in the Sadhana, or spiritual practice, of Buddha Sakyamuni. This practice involves reflecting on his life and receiving the blessings of his compassion and wisdom.
The Mindfulness of Saka Dawa Vesak Festival 2025
Saga
Dawa, in Tibetan, means the fourth month of the year, also known as the
month of Vesak. In the early morning of the full moon day, Siddhartha
Goutam is believed to have attained Enlightenment under the Bodhi tree
in Bodhgaya.
